Rowers To Leave On
Summer Grecian Trip

By Fred Leffel
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

After the most successful season
in Cavalier crew history, Virginia's
oarsmen have begun to plan for
their upcoming trip to Greece this
summer. Approximately fifteen of
the sweepmen will be making the
trip, the result of an invitation from
the Greek government and the
Greek National Crew.

Glenn Russell, a spokesman for
the team, reports that the squad
will be leaving June 19 for a
four-week stay in the Balkan state,
with stopovers in Rome and
Luxembourg on the way to Athens.
Five regattas have been arranged,
according to Mr. Russell, including
two against the Army and national
teams. Included in the itinerary is
an extensive tour of the Aegean
Islands, birthplace of Virginia coach
Panos Eliades.

Panos, in his second year at
Virginia, was a ten-year member of
the Greek National team, seven of
them as European pairs champion.
A celebrated athlete in his home
country, where crew is one of the
most popular sports, Panos left
Greece several years ago to pursue a
coaching career in the U. S.

Among those making the trip,
along with Coach Eliades and Mr.
Russell, are Dan Howard, Thor
Strong, Todd Tisdale, Derek Smith,
Ron Binder, Greg Peck, Rod Freed,
Bob Webb, Jeff Newton, Steve
Pappas, and Trennie Walker.
Norton Schlacter, presently
considering an invitation to row in
an Olympic development program
this summer, may also join his
teammates for the trip.
