Ex-Wahoo Arnette
Leads Pensacola

Former Cavalier Gene Arnette,
who quarterbacked the Wahoos to a
7-3 season last year, has led the
Pensacola Navy Goshawks to two
early season wins and is quickly
making the people at the Pensacola
Naval Air Station forget Roger
Staubach, who played for the
Goshawks a few years ago.

In leading the team to wins over
East Central Oklahoma and Jacksonville
State, Arnette has completed
37 of 64 passes for a 57.8
per cent completion average, 504
yards, and five touchdowns. He has
also rushed for 18 yards and two
scores.

His favorite target has been John
Vrionis of Holy- Cross, who has
caught 13 Arnette tosses for 230
yards.

Going into last week's game
with winless Stanford University
Arnette had guided the offense to
an average of 32 points and 417
total yards per game. Of the 834
total yards for the season, Arnette
has accounted for 522.

Pensacola Head Coach Bob
Elzey is happy with the performance
of his 6′, 180 pound quarterback.
"Arnette is doing a fine job
for us," he said before last week's
game.

Last fall Arnette led the Cavaliers
to their first winning season in
many years. That record breaking
backfield included running backs
Jeff Anderson, Frank Quayle and
flanker Jeff Calamos. Tight Joe
Hoppe, a favorite target of Arnette,
also helped move the offense.

Wahoo fans will have an opportunity
to watch Arnette, who is a
native of Charlottesville, this week
when the team from Pensacola goes
into action against the Quantico
Marines. The game will be played at
Quantico at 2 p.m. on Friday,
October 4.
