UNC, Clemson Tied For Lead,
Duke, Wake Score Big Wins

Clemson, as a result of its
weekend victory over the Cavaliers,
remains undefeated in the ACC,
and tied for the top position with
North Carolina with a 2-0 record.

Duke, upset last week by
Clemson, got back to winning with
a 41-13 romp over N.C. State in one
of two games with two conference
teams, while Notre Dame topped
North Carolina 16-0, South
Carolina whipped Maryland 35-6,
and Wake Forest upset Tulsa, 51-21.

Ernie Jackson, defensive star in
previous Blue Devil wins, became
the offensive star for Duke
Saturday as he moved into the
team's injury-ridden backfield and
scored two touchdowns. Bill
Thompson added two more
touchdowns, and quarterback
Dennis Satyshur passed for one and
ran for another as the Devils, noted
for their defense, exploded for 366
yards total offense.

North Carolina held Notre Dame
to just one touchdown, but could
not score against the Irish defense.
Carolina threatened only once, and
was held to 149 total yards against
sixth-ranked Notre Dame in the
16-0 defeat.

Two punt returns by Dickie
Harris sparked the South Carolina
win as one set up the first score, a
twelve-yard run by Tommy
Simmons, and another for 59 yards
and a touchdown gave the
Gamecocks, who gained only
twelve yards on offense in the first
half, a 14-0 lead.

Coach Paul Dietzel's "Carolina
Bandit" defense stopped the
Maryland attack until late in the
fourth period when the Terps
scored on a 31-yard pass from Jeff
Shugars to Dennis O'Hara, but by
then it was too late, as the
Gamecocks led 28-6. They added
another on a pass interception in
the closing minutes.

Army, this week's Cavalier
opponent, led Air Force 7-3 at the
half before the Falcons exploded to
win 20-7.

Wake Forest came up with the
week's big upset as they complied
528 yards on the ground to top
Tulsa, conquerers of Arkansas
earlier.
