Polo Squad Finishes Perfect 7-0 Slate

By Steve Giannini
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Virginia's undefeated Polo Club
overcame the difficulties of playing
on an indoor field and defeated the
Farmington Hunt Club 10-7 on
their field.

Farmington's indoor-sized field is
shorter than Brook Hill Farm's
outdoor field and has rounded high
board sides. The style of play is
bunched up around the ball with
the ball being banked off the side
boards for position.

The Virginia team started with a
three point lead due to the superior
ratings of the Farmington players;
Jake Carle and Rodger Rhinehart
both carried a one rating while
Harry Wilson was rated at three.

Culter Scores First

John Cutler of the Cavaliers did
not seem to have too much trouble
adjusting to the new style of play as
he maneuvered his Camelot
into position for his shot square
into the goal.

But the older and more experienced
Farmington malletmen began
to show their finesse. Mr.
Rhinehart, playing at the number
two position opposite of his son,
Rob, hit for two later in the first
chukkar and Col. Wilson added two
more to leave the score tied at the
end of the first chukkar, four all.

The Virginia horsemen seemed
to be having some trouble adjusting
to the style of play, being used to
the wide-open fast play typical of
the action at Brook Hill Farm.

Ray Norden entered the lineup
for Virginia in the second period
and promptly scored two goals
while Mr. Rhinehart was adding
another for Farmington. At the half
the Cavaliers led by a slight point,
6-5.

Ponies Aid In Winning Effort

After the intermission Virginia
roared back to pull further ahead

on two more scores by Norden and
one by Dave Banks. Two of the
Virginia ponies got into the offensive
attack inadvertently during this
chukkar and managed to kick the
ball in for two more scores.
However, one went into the Farmington
goal. Willard and Wallace
were the alleged culprits.

Mr. Rhinehart Rallies

Mr. Rhinehart rounded out the
scoring for Farmington with a
fourth chukkar tally and was the
high man for his team with four
goals for the evening.

All Lettermen Return

With their unblemished mark
and all players returning, Virginia
figures to be in the running for the
national collegiate championship
when fall play opens in September.
