Grapplers Fall To
Slippery Rock, 30-9

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

Slippery Rock rolled into
U-Hall Monday night and then
let the varsity wrestling team
slip all over it as the tough
Pennsylvania team recorded a
30-9 victory.

The Rocks, led by a
contingent of boys from
coal-mining country with a
sprinkling of Granby (Norfolk,
Va.) grapplers, allowed the
Cavs only three decisions,
while taking seven bouts
including three pins.

"They had some horses,"
commented mat mentor
George Edwards about the
muscular visitors, who included
two small college runner-ups.
"We were just out-classed."

Virginia victors were
126-pounder Dave Wendell,
158-pounder Tom Derrickson,
and 177-pounder captain Kevin
Michaels.

Wendell, a 10-6 victor over
Mark Honness, who defeated
Wendell twice in high school,
iced the Wahoos' first victory
on a last-minute takedown.

By the time Derrickson
took the mat, Slippery Rock
had all but wrapped up the
meet with an 18-3 lead.
Fighting to preserve the Cavs'
honor, Derrickson scored a fast
takedown and predicament and
didn't let up, winning 10-4.

Michaels displayed some of
his ACC Championship form
and broke a 1-1 tie with a
last-period takedown.
