Sociology Department
Opens New Course

The Department of Sociology
and Anthropology is fairly new,
and until recently was mostly
limited to third or fourth year
students. This year, however, the
department will offer an
introductory sociology course open
to all students.

The new course is to be taught
by Theodore Caplow, a full
professor from Columbia
University, and a very well known
figure in the field of sociology.

Professor Caplow is the author
of many books, the most
well-known being "The Academic
Market Place," a study of how
universities obtain their faculties.
He has also written "Two Against
One," "Principles of
Organizations," and "The
Sociology of Work," all of which
are widely used in universities
around the world.

The introductory course will
hold 315 students, and there is still
lots of room for anyone wishing to
add it. The course meets for lecture
on Tuesday and Thursday from
11:00 to 11:50, with discussion
sections on Monday, Wednesday, or
Friday from 3:30 to 4:20.

Sociological research, theory,
and community studies will be the
main topics of the course,
combined with a general
introduction to sociology.

Professor Caplow is interested in
the formation of a solid
introductory course, as evidenced
by the fact that he, the Department
chairman, is teaching it. He has also
written an introductory textbook
for sociology which is now in the
process of publication.

Described as one of the most
exciting undergraduate professors
at Columbia University, Professor
Caplow is a large addition to his
fledgling department, and his
course will be a welcome addition
to undergraduates wishing to take a
sociology course without
committing themselves to that
major.

There is also a prospective plan
for Professor Caplow to set up a
major research institute here on
Program Effectiveness Studies.
