Gridders Sustain Injuries

By Steve Giannini
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"Mostly a list of aggravating
bumps and bruises," is how
head coach George Blackburn
describes the injuries his Cavaliers
suffered in the battle with
the Duke Blue Devils this past
Saturday. The Virginia eleven
was finally able to put it all
together to come up with a
10-0 victory before a Homecomings
crowd of 25,000 in
Scott Stadium.

Featuring a mauling defensive
unit, the Virginia team
took an exacting toll on the Blue
Devils from Durham, knocking
their highly touted quarterback Leo
Hart from the game late in the
second period, but they did not
come away without paying the
price. Coach Blackie's injury roster
lists the names of five walking
wounded.

Bressan May Need Surgery

Defensive tackle Bob Bressan
appears to be the most seriously
injured, having done some damage
to the ligaments in his knees. As
yet, it is not known if surgery will
be needed, but he will certainly be
out of action for the next few
games.

Among the less critical are end
Bob Bischoff, who has sprained his
ankle, and defensive end Al
Sinesky, who hurt his shoulder
again. Defensive tackle Randy
Lestyk needed some stitches, and
may have broken his hand, but the
x-rays aren't back yet.

Captain Bob Rannigan suffered
a shoulder bruise, Gary Helman and
Paul Schrker were shaken up, but
all except tackle Bressan are expected
to see action against William &
Mary in Williamsburg on Saturday.

Wyncoop Recuperating

Another bright spot is that
fourth-year tailback Dave Wyncoop
will be back in the line-up this
weekend. After seriously hurting
his left ankle against Clemson, it
was doubtful that he would be back
in action this soon. He practiced
this past week, but did not get the
call against Duke.

W&M Young, Inexperienced

Despite the loss of Bressan, the
Wahoos look to be a sure thing
against William & Mary. Suffering
after graduation, the Indians will
field a green backfield in both
offensive and defensive categories.
They figure to be an aggressive
defensive team, with little punch
once they get their hands on the
ball. The Tribe has lost its first two
contests, both away games with
Cincinnati and Temple. With
Wyncoop back in action, the
Virginia offense should give the
W&M defense quite a workout.
