University Union, Publications
Supplement Study Activities

By Anson Franklin
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

In addition to The Cavalier
Daily, many activities are open to
first-year men, including the
University Union and other student
publications.

The University Union, found
in 1932, is a student-run
organization which sponsors a
broad range of programs and
activities for the students, ranging
from concerts, dances and mixers
to the annual Blood Drive and the
Fine Arts Contest.

The Union also sponsors the
Artists Series, which brings to the
University prominent performers in
music and drama, and holds
exhibits in Newcomb Hall

Last year at Spring break the
Union sponsored a trip to Puerto
Rico for students and faculty.

Corks & Curls, the University's
yearbook, has offered a pictorial
and written account of student life
each year since 1888. Large
sections are devoted to sports, life
at the University, fraternities and
other organizations.

The University of Virginia
Magazine (UVM) is published five
times during the school year. The
magazine is the descendant of the
Virginia Spectator, a colorful
magazine which was banned in the
early 1800's. UVM carries stories,
poems, and essays written by
students, and occasional picture
essays.

Satire, Discussion

One of the newest publications
on the Grounds is Rapier, a
"magazine of satire and broad
discussion." The magazine, founded
two years ago, will begin publishing
monthly for first time this year.

Plume & Sword, which is
published four times during the
school year, contains poems and
short stories written by students at
the University.

The Virginia Weekly is a
bi-weekly publication of opinion
written by students and faculty at
the University.

The University Union and the
publications, including The Cavalier
Daily, are open to all first-year men
who are interested in participating
in University activities. An activities
night will be held sometime this
month.
