Joyce Busted With Grass,
Five ACC Stars Enjoy Week

It was a great week for five
basketball stars, but South
Carolina's Kevin Joyce
probably wishes he could
forget the whole thing.

Joyce and a friend were
charged with felonious
possession of marijuana after
the pair was stopped for
speeding in North Carolina.
The patrolman making the
arrest detected that familiar
scent and had the car searched.

The former Gamecock
All-American was the first
round draft choice of the
Golden State Warriors in last
month's NBA draft.

While Joyce was having his
problems, four seniors from
Big Four schools were
showered with good fortune.
Gary Melchionni of Duke
signed a multi-year contract
with the Phoenix Suns
organization. Melchionni was
the Suns' third round draft
choice.

Portland Trailblazer coach
Jack McCloskey continued to
show his preference for ACC
players, picking two in the
NBA's supplemental draft. The
Trailblazers used their pair of
choices to grab Wake Forest's
Eddie Payne and North
Carolina State's 6-6 forward
Rick Holdt.

Meanwhile, George Karl of
North Carolina and his
teammate Bobby Jones were
enjoying an outstanding series
against the Russian national
team. Karl's hustling defense
and Jone's rebounding were
instrumental in the American
domination of the series.
