Coattail:
Slim Hope
office on Pres. Nixon's
coattails has been shown to be
only a slim hope. The coattail
effect has not worked in
Virginia in the past.
Mr. Scott's campaign has
been gaining momentum in
recent weeks, but Sen. Spong's
campaign has hardly gotten
started. With two weeks left in
the race, he either has to begin
a massive effort or possibly
suffer defeat. Incumbents,
however, are hard to unseat,
and Spong is relying on his
incumbency to carry him
through.
Virginia could find itself
with its first Republican
senator since creation if Rep.
Scott gets a substantial portion
of the 40 per cent undecided
vote. If that occurs, Virginia
would stand to lose the closest
thing it has to a liberal
senator.
