Wake Wins By Record Margin

By DOUG DOUGHTY

Wake Forest claimed five of
the first six positions and
outdistanced the field in the
ACC Golf Championships,
completed Tuesday at the
Foxfire Country Club in
Pinehurst, N.C.

Gaining their seventh.
consecutive title, the Demon
Deacons set a record with a
44-stroke winning margin, the
largest in the history of the
event.

Pacing the Wake onslaught
was freshman Jay Hass, the
nephew of pro golfer Bob
Goalby, who shot three
consecutive 71s to finish one
stroke ahead of teammate Mike
Crowley, whose last day 67 left
him just shy of the title with a
214 total.

Runnerup in the team
category was North Carolina
State, with 1136 swings to
Wake's 1092. With only the
top five scorers from each team
eligible for the team total,
North Carolina was third with
1138 strokes, then Maryland
(1139), Duke (1142), Clemson
(1172) and Virginia last with a
score of 1117.

Low man for the Cavaliers
was fourth-year man Mike
Mozur, whose 228 total left
him 15 strokes off the pace.
Mozur had been in second
place after two rounds of play,
but he shot a curious final
round of 37-45 ... 82, hacking
himself out of contention for
the championship and a spot in
the NCAA's on the back nine.

Despite his misfortune,
Mozur still defeated Virginia's
next best, Brad Reynolds, by
four strokes. Reynolds had an
80-77-75 series for a 232 total,
King Oehmig shot a 234, Whit
Holcomb 238 and Bill Hickson
245.

The scores of Henry Stevens
and Mike Balavage did not
count. Stevens managed a 248
while Balavage shot 82-83before
being disqualified on
the final round for not putting
out a hole.

Members of the
championship five included
Haas, Crowley, Lex Alexander,
Tom Case and David Thore.
The team will go on to the
NCAA Championships in May.
