Assistant SID Doyle Smith
Adds Lacrosse Association Post

BY DOUG DOUGHTY

Unsung Doyle Smith,
two-year assistant sports
information director at the
University, was last week
named Sports Information
Director of the United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association (USILA).

No Previous Position

The appointment was
announced by Roberts Shields,
Athletic Director at Fairleigh
Dickinson and President of the
USILA. There had been no
previous position of this sort,
but Mr. Smith's new duties had
been, in his words, "handled
by a combination of people".

Duties

Such duties will include the
preparation of the weekly
national rating system, the
coordination of statistical
reports and other publicity
functions related to the
USILA. The Virginia press
release on Mr. Smith's
appointment also mentions

that he will assist in the
"promotion of films and
television for growth and
development of the sport".

"What I Like"

"It's the kind of thing I'm
interested in. I'm not thinking
about whether it's a long-range
or short-range position. It's
what I like," remarked Mr.
Smith yesterday afternoon.

A 1966 graduate of Johns
Hopkins University, Mr. Smith
is a graduate student in
American history at the
University. He will continue his
academic work and will remain
as Barney Cooke's right arm
over at University Hall.

Less Work In The Spring

"My job here is seasonal.
My duties are less in the spring.
Football and basketball take
more of my time. I usually
work with the lacrosse team in
the spring anyway," answered
Mr. Smith about the burden of
the two jobs.

"Ideal Man"

Both Mr. Shields and
Washington Lee AD Bill
McHenry, USILA vice
president, were pleased to have
a man of Mr. Smith's talents
working for them. Mr.
McHenry said, "We think he is
the ideal man for the job. This
is a great step forward in the
promotion of lacrosse on a
national scale."
