Duke's Jones, Newman Head ACC Draftees;
Sullivan Picked By Browns In 15th Round
By STEVE GASKE
The NFL draft of the
national college football talent
ended yesterday with what
seemed like several surprises.
Houston, with the whole
crop to look over and decide
which player to honor as the
number one pick decided on a
defensive tackle from Tampa,
John Matuszak, passing up
Heisman Trophy winner
Johnny Rodgers. Rodgers was
snubbed by the pros until the
25th pick while the runnerup
in the balloting for outstanding
football player in the land,
Greg Pruitt, wasn't drafted
until the fourth pick in the
second round by Cleveland.
Virginia's Dave Sullivan was
also drafted by Cleveland, but
the ACC's leading receiver was
passed over until the 15th
round. A 22-year old from
Steelton, Pa., Sullivan broke
every Cavalier receiving record
during his three-year career.
Steve Jones of Duke proved
to be the first ACC player
picked. Jones, the conference's
leading ground gainer this past
season was chosen in the fifth
round by Los Angeles. Against
Virginia earlier this year, Jones
ran for 188 yards including
175 yards in the first half.
Clemson center Rick Harrell
was the next conference player
to be picked as the New York
Jets took him in the sixth
round. Another sixth round
pick was Duke guard Ed
Newman.
Ken Garrett, a running back
for Wake Forest who was
mentioned on a few preseason
All-American teams was picked
in the eighth round.
Melvin Parker, a Duke
defensive end, was picked by
St. Louis in the 15th round.
Don Strock, the
record-setting quarterback for
Virginia Tech, was chosen by
the Miami Dolphins in the fifth
round.
