Men, Women To Meet Eli In Polo
By RANDY HIRSCH
Both Virginia's men's and
women's polo clubs host teams
from Yale this weekend at the
Farmington Hunt Club. The
women's match is scheduled
for Friday at 3:30 while the
men are to play Sunday at
2:30
The women's contest will be
the first all-female
intercollegiate polo
competition ever held. Virginia
will be led by regulars Dede
D'Orsi, Judy Pace, and Ann
Denison. Although the women
have never competed regularly
against other schools, Miss
D'Orsi had an opportunity to
scrimmage last fall, and will be
the team's most experienced
member.
The men's team, which
made it into the finals of the
Intercollegiate Championships
last fall, has compiled 2-0
record in spring competition. It
has three more regular season
contests following Sunday's
match against the Bulldogs.
Unlike the fall schedule, there
will be no post-season
championships.
The men are led by regulars
John Stuart, Mark Pirrung,
Roger Steele and Reid
Graham. Stuart is the captain
and high scorer of the team, but
will not play Sunday. In
number one position will be
Pirrung, number two Graham,
and number three Steele.
The men's team has three
more games scheduled this
month. It competes against
Oxridge on the 14th.
Middleburg on the 21st, and
Farmington, another team
from Charlottesville, on the
26th.
Considered "lame duck"
competition, the spring polo
season does not count in
intercollegiate standing. The
men will return to regular
action next fall with a team
considered a strong contender
for the collegiate
championship, presently held
by the University of Connecticut.
