The sunny slopes of Val Gardener,
Italy, was the setting Sunday
for Billy Kidd's victory in the
combined Alpine gold medal. The
award, first ever won by an
American, came after Kidd rallied
in the last run of the downhill with
a time of 2:25.52. Kidd, in his last
event as an amateur, was hampered
throughout the competition by a
severe back injury.
