Cavalier Rally
Falls Short, 13-11

By Gordy Rawles
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Although the season's finale
resulted in a disappointing loss for
the Cavalier lacrosse team to
Carling Lacrosse Club by a score of
13-11, the Virginia stickmen finished
with a 7-3 mark, their best since
1952.

Spear-headed by the four-goal
performance of Jim Potter, the
Cavaliers came back from a 11-3 half-time
deficit to come to within two
goals of the Brewers after having
suffered the results of an unfruitful
first half.

The second period proved the
downfall for the Cavaliers as the
Carling middies dominated play and
accounted for six of eight goals
tallied in the Brewers' cause. Jerry
Pfeiffer sent the Virginians into the
half-time locker room session with
something to think about by
flinging in the eleventh goal.

Seemingly inspired by one of
Coach Beardmore's intermission
spiels, the Virginia defense began
to spark the comeback as Co-captain
Pete Coy and Doug Hilbert
intercepted a pair of Carling clears
to set up two goals by Jay Connor
and Jim Potter.

The defense was brilliant, but
the offensive show was soon to
come. Doug Tarring started the ball
rolling by scoring an unassisted goal
on a rebound after battling through
the Carling goalie and two defensemen.

After a fight between Virginia's
Doug Hilbert and the Brewers' Bob
Lemken at the end of the third
period, the Cavaliers began to
control all facets of play. However,
they could not penetrate the
defenses of goalie Tony Frederico
to cash in.

The Brewers scored an additional
tally, but Potter fed to Charlie
Rullamn to narrow the margin to
12-9. Immediately afterwards
Bobby Proutt struck for Virginia,
and the crowd oohed with hopes of
pulling out a victory, but Jim
Kenworthy wrapped it up for
Carling with the final goal as the
last few seconds ticked away.
