UCLA,State Still 1,2

ACC also-rans, Maryland
and North Carolina may have a
lot of ground to pick up before
they can challenge undefeated
N. C. State in the league
standings, but as far as the UPI
pollsters are concerned there
really isn't much difference
between the three.

In the latest rankings, the
'Pack and UNC continued their
holding pattern in second and
sixth, respectively, while the
Terps took over the seventh
notch from Alabama, a team
which made a spectacular fall
to the lists of the unranked.

Record-breaking UCLA
garnered all the first-place
votes to retain its customary
top spot, while Long Beach
State, 19-1, remained in third.

The Gophers of Minnesota
burrowed their way up to
number four after kayoing
Ohio State in a rematch of last
year's brawl. They are followed
in fifth by 18-2
Marquette Houston, a narrow
victor over scandal-plagued
Southwest Louisiana, Kansas
State and Indiana, a two-time
loser last week, complete the
first ten.

Threatening them are
11th-ranked Providence, driven
by the tandem of Marvin
Barnes and Ernie DiGregorio,
Big Eight power Missouri, and
the Bill Schaeffer-led Redmen
of St. John's. Jacksonville,
18-3, and Oregon State
reappear in the rankings after
brief leaves of absence.
