Lawrence Hires Two Grid Assistants

By BOB PARSLEY

While Mr. B.P. and his
basketball teammates hold the
interest of Virginia sports fans.
Coach Don Lawrence and his
"Fighting Cavaliers" are
working hard in preparation
for the start of "Football '73."

The activity has been
feverish in the past weeks as
the players push to get into top
condition and Mr. Lawrence
works to revise his coaching
staff.

The revision of the coaching
staff has been necessitated by
the resignation of two assistant
coaches, Al Groh and Pete
Pucher. This past week, Mr.
Lawrence moved to fill the
vacancies left by these men in
announcing the hiring of two
new coaches, George Boutselis
and Dave Dunkelberger.

Coach Boutselis'
appointment brings ten years
of coaching experience to the
Wahoo staff. A former North
Carolina quarterback, he has
served on the Tar Heel staff as
well as coaching at Cincinnati
and Maryland.

In 1972 he joined the staff
of Johnny Majors at Iowa State
as a linebacker coach. He
moved with Majors to
Pittsburgh at the end of the
season before deciding to
accept the Cavalier position.

In making the
announcement, Mr. Lawrence
said, "George brings to Virginia
a wealth of football knowledge
and coaching experience which
he has gained under some
excellent coaches. We are
extremely pleased to have a man
of his talents join the staff."

Mr. Boutselis is expected to
be named the defensive
coordinator for the Cavaliers.

Mr. Dunkelberger also
brings a decade of coaching
know-how to the Cavalier
ranks. After graduating from
Depauw University, he moved
into coaching at Cincinnati, a
job which he later abandoned
for a year of high school
coaching and two years as the
coach of linebackers and
defensive backs at Indiana State.

Dunkelberger returned to
Cincinnati and for two years
served as the Bearcats'
defensive coordinator. His pass
defense ranked second in the
nation in 1971, giving up only
68 yards per game.

His exact position in the
Virginia coaching staff is not
yet known, as Coach Lawrence
is expected to announce the
permanent alignment next
week after the hiring of a final
assistant coach, presumably
late this week.

While the coaching staff is
gradually rounding into shape,
the athletes themselves are
working hard with the same
goal in mind.

Over the winter months,
voluntary conditioning for all
Cavalier footballers has been
taking place. This past Monday
the Cavaliers began four weeks
of intense physical
conditioning in preparation for
the start of spring practice on
March 12.
