Laurinburg Runs Past Cav JV's, 86-72

By DOUG DOUGHTY

After an unpredictable but
pleasantly surprising upset of
the North Carolina junior
varsity at Chapel Hill, the
Cavalier JV's squandered an
early lead in succumbing to
Laurinburg Institute, 86-72,
last night at University Hall.

While the prep-schoolers
were still getting adjusted to
the court, the junior varsity
registered an 18-8 lead. Big
men Ned Tiley and Spencer
Graham led the onslaught as
the visiting youngsters seemed
intimidated.

Laurinburg, the prep school
that sired professional athletes
Charlie Scott and Floyd Little,
returned to Virginia this year
with the nucleus of the young
chib that lost to the then
Cavayearlings last season.

Paced by center Gerald
Long and forward James
Sparrows, Laurinburg chipped
away at the Virginia lead and
the visitors were ahead, 42-33,
at halftime.

Second-half action
continued much in the same
vein. Laurinburg ran its lead up
to 18, weathered a Cavalier
comeback effort, and held a
comfortable 14-point
advantage at the buzzer.

Leading scorers for the
home town junior varsity were
Graham, who had 14 at
intermission, with 18, Tiley
and Brain Tully with 12, Bob
Sefcik with 11 and sub John
Pirko with 10.

Sparrows had 22 for
Laurinburg while Long had 13.
Guard John Barrows joined the
second-half barrage and his
long-range gunning helped the
backcourt man to an 18-point
night.

Last Thursday's game was
the high point of the junior
varsity's season. The Tar Babies
spotted the Cavaliers a
ten-point lead at the start of
the game, but roared back
behind football tight end
Charles Waddell to swing a
41-38 halftime lead.

Second-half action was
nip-and-tuck until the visiting
Cavaliers caught their second
wind with close to ten minutes
remaining and maimed the Tar
Babies, 87-72.

Leading scorer for Virginia
was guard Tully, who
neutralized the Carolina press
and still found time to gun for
24 points. Waddell had 27
points for Carolina but found
little support.

It was the first time in
anybody's memory that the
Virginia JV has beaten the
North Carolina junior varsity at
Chapel Hill.
