Despite the ACC's
moderate rise in the college
football world, it still has a
long way to go before it
reaches the level of the
Southeastern Conference
cellar. Just ask Maryland grid
Coach Jerry Claiborne or UNC
Athletic Director Homer Rice.

Both these men have
expressed a strong desire to
escape comfortable posts and
attempt the considerable feat
of renovating the Kentucky
football program. At the
moment, Claiborne, who
played his college ball at
Lexington under Bear Bryant,
appears to have the inside track
for the job.

In his 10 years as head man
at VPI, Claiborne compiled a
61-37-2 mark before coming to
Maryland where he led the
Terps to a record of 5-5-1,
their best in eight seasons.

Although Claiborne
obviously wants to move up in
the coaching ranks, Rice's
motives remain somewhat of a
mystery. Acknowledge to be
one of the originators of the
triple option, the incorrigible
Rice is apparently willing to
desert a lucrative arrangement
in Chapel Hill for Kentucky's
coaches' graveyard.
