Parkhill Lands All-A Mention
In Second-Team UPI Listings

By FRAN MARKON

Justifying a season of
hopeful hanging in the
University Hall rafters, the
famous "Mr. BP is A-A" sign
was proved correct this
morning with the
announcement by United Press
International that star Cavalier
guard Barry Parkhill had
garnered a berth on its
second team All-America
squad.

Parkhill finished the season
with a 21.9 average, best in the
tough ACC, and was voted as
the conference's Player of the
Year. He was also the only
unanimous pick for both the
All-ACC and All-Tournament
teams.

Going into Friday's NIT
opener with Lafayette, Parkhill
has now received at least an
honorable mention in all the
"A-A" polls released so far.
Basketball Weekly named him
to their squad as one of the
nation's fifteen best players
some time ago with Parkhill's
most recent accolades coming
from The Sporting News.

A quick glance of Parkhill's
statistics show him to be a 45
per cent marksman from the
field and a 77 per cent foul
shooter. His 117 assists lead the
Cavaliers and his 4.5
rebounding average more than
doubles that of any other
guard on the team.

What doesn't show up in the
statistics, however, is the
myriad of miscellaneous
functions Parkhill is asked to
perform. Coach Bill Gibson
counts on the State College,
Pa. third-yearman almost
exclusively to bring the ball
upcourt, break presses and
quarterback the offense on
almost every play.

The UPI first team included
UCLA stars Henry Bibby, a
senior guard, and Bill Walton,
everyone's All-American pick
at center.

High school teammates Ed
Ratleff, a Long Beach State
guard , and Dwight Lamar, a
Southwestern Louisiana guard
and the country's top NCAA
scorer, were also first teamers,
joined on the elite five by
Marquette's latest addition to
the nouveau riche, center Jim
Chones, now under contract to
the ABA New York Nets.

While understandably
delighted at Parkhill's
selection, the Department of
Athletics could barely take
time out for congratulations,
so immersed are they in the
large scale logistics involved in
getting all students who wish
to attend the NIT up to New
York.

Students still wishing to
obtain tickets are requested to
call Mr. Steve Sebo's office at
924-3013 before noon today as
Madison Square Garden has
recall rights on all student
tickets not sold before a
certain date set by The Garden.
Tickets are, however, still
eminently available.

It was also announced by
Mr. Sebo that, should Virginia
slip by Lafayette into Monday
night's quarterfinals, that
student tickets for that game
would be available at UHall on
Saturday morning and
afternoon.
