"B" And "D' Oppose Inverness Virgins While Richmond's Spiders Take On The "C" And "E" Sides

Rugby enthusiasts will be
treated to the 1971 home opener
Sunday when the Virginia Rugby
Football Club host five matches.

The Virginia "A" side,
considered one of the top collegiate
teams in the East, will face the
Richmond Club in the 2 p.m.
feature on Nameless Field, near
Memorial Gym.

Richmond is a city club which
boasts several former Cavalier
ruggers. Ralph Robertson, a fixture
for several years on Nameless,
returns to the pitch at his prop
position, only this time in hostile
colors. Bobby Ess, second side
fullback when he played here, is at
fly half. Former Cavalier Jim
Hawkes will also wear a Richmond
uniform.

In the Virginia lineup will be
many old faces, with newcomers
challenging. Veteran hooker Steve
Bolton seems to have the edge over
Kirk Kirtland and Bill Binford.
Among the candidates for two prop
slots are Clay Ratheree, Bob Floth,
and Phil Mitchell. Possible choices
at second row are Jay Waldron,
Gary Ahrens, and Dave Hudson.

Experienced Byron Shankman
paces the wing forwards with aid
from Boyd Page and Rick Lawton.
Binding the scrums together will be
Greg Luce or Joe Seals.

Either Mike Frakes of Jim
Bledsoe will man the Scrum half,
while Tom Furniss or Morgan
Cooper will run at fly half. Filling
the inside and outside center
positions will be Mark Krebs, Peter
Schmidt, and Marty Millichap.

Ronnie Pulliam will handle one
wing, with Chuck Shelton at the
other in the place of the injured
Buzz Whit. David Levy has the edge
over Mark Storm at the fullback
spot.

The second and fourth side
matches will open the afternoon at
12:30 against the Inverness Virgins,
a Washington club, made up mostly
of former University of Maryland
players.

Immediately after the featured
match the third and fifth sides
square off against Richmond on
Nameless and Carr's Hill Field.
