Duke, N.C. State Fall
Matmen Up Mark To 8-3
Heavyweight Paul Bochm
pinned North Carolina State's
Wesley Head with :55 remaining in
the final match of the contest last
Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., as the
Cavalier wrestlers took a 17-15
upset win over the Wolfpack for
their second ACC win of the
weekend.
The wrestlers lost an early lead
but trailed 15-12 going into the
final match. Bochn needed a win by
decision to tie the match, and a pin
for a Virginia win. He built up a 4-0
lead in the first two periods before
finally wearing down Head and
pinning him.
Wins by Kim Hatcher and John
Pitus in the first two matches gave
the matmen a 6-0 lead early in the
match. Pitas' win over Jim Pace,
who had beaten him 7-2 last year,
was cited by Coach George
Edwards as one of the outstanding
performances of the match. Shelley
Zablow won in the 142-pound
match after Lou Pavia dropped his
match at 134 to give Virginia a 9-3
lead.
After Zablow's win, the
Wolfpack took three matches in a
row to go ahead, before a clutch
win by 177-pounder Ted Moore
kept the team's hopes alive and tied
the score at 12-12. Moore won over
Ben Harry, who had previously lost
only one match. Pete Faber
dropped a 6-2 decision in the
190-pound class to set the stage for
Bochn's deciding win.
On Friday the wrestlers took an
easy 33-3 win over the Duke Blue
Devils at Durham. The squad came
close to a shutout as they took a
33-0 lead into the final heavyweight
match only to have Duke's Ed
Newman take a 14-2 win over Dick
Opp.
Duke presented little opposition
before the final match as there were
only two close matches in the
entire contest. According to Mr.
Edwards, Zablow's 5-3 decision
over previously undefeated Don
Morano and Boehm's pin of Seth
Whitaker in 58 seconds of the first
period were the night's top
performances.
The weekend wins boosted the
Cavaliers' record to 8-3 overall, and
3-0 in the conference. They face
VPI at home on Saturday, followed
by another home match with highly
rated Maryland, the perennial
champs of the ACC, the following
week.
