IMs Start Winter Play;
Hollies, SAE Favored
High Point competition will
move into its winter schedule in the
next few weeks after the exam
period hill, Basketball, bowling,
pool, swimming, squash, and the
perennially favorite boxing will all
share the intramural spotlight.
Memorial Gym basketball gets
rolling this evening at seven. Though
the quality of the action is
pretty erratic, sometimes bordering
on the superb, more often than not
leaning toward the mickey mouse.
High Point league competition will
be hot and heavy this winter.
merging as a pre-season favorite
will be SAE.
Right on their tail, however, is
Phi Gam, the winner of three man
play last year. In the finals of the
five man competition last season
SAE whipped Phi Gam for the
championship, but both houses
have the majority of their talent
back. The Phi Gams won the title
the year before over this same
Grady Avenue gang.
Emerging as dark horses will
probably be ATO and DKF. Both
teams boast height and experience
enough to pull upsets.
Bowling will begin Monday at
Mountain Bowl behind Barracks
Road Shopping Center, and the
squash action is currently in its
fourth round.
Entries for the pool tournament
are due a week from tomorrow.
Back this year will be Neville
Deart of Phi Delt who won the
title last season.
Swimming entries are due the
same day, and the tournament will
be held during the first week in
March. Last year's winners were
Saint Anthony and effusive Phi
Delts.
Instruction by former Virginia
coach Billy Williams will begin the
boxing season Thursday, February
12. A local businessman who has
always taken an interest in boxing.
Mr. Williams traditionally initiates
Memorial Gym boxing, which will
culminate in a tournament to be
held March 24th and 26th. Returning
this year are six of last season's
champions; among them are Dick
Rotchkiss, Bill Hill, Peter Schmidt,
Gary Helman, and Frank Roda.
