Linebacker Paul Reid
Named Cavalier Standout

By Eric Tompkins

Defense was the name of the
game Saturday as the Wahoos
pounded the Duke Blue Devils into
the Scott Stadium turf, 10-0. One
of the chief contributors to that
outstanding defensive effort was
linebacker Paul Reid, Virginia's
Player of the Week.

A 6-foot, 206-pound junior,
Reid led the Cavalier charge into
the Duke backfield all afternoon.
Because of this and other solid
performances turned in by the
Wahoo defensive corps, the
Cavaliers blanked their first A.C.C.
opponent since becoming a member
of the conference in 1953.

Cited by defensive coordinator
Don Lawrence for his "outstanding"
play, Reid began to wreak
havoc on the highly acclaimed
Duke offensive unit early in the
game as he battered ace Blue Devil
quarterback, Leo Hart, on the first
set of downs. For the remainder of
the contest, Hart spent more time
nursing his wounds than he did
directing his team.

Reid is recognized by the squad
as a team leader who has come up
the hard way. His hard-nosed play
was instrumental in keeping the
Blue Devil offense off balance
Saturday. This rugged performance
paid off as Hart had to be replaced
in the second quarter by sophomore
quarterback Dennis Statyshur
because of a bad thumb on his
throwing hand. Reid and his defensive
comrades did not let up,
however, as they forced a battered
Statyshur to seek the safety of the
sidelines late in the second half.

Going according to game plan,
linebackers Ed Kihm, "Possom"
Page, and Reid frequently employed
a blitz to break up the Blue
Devil passing attack. Such stunting
moves caused many errant passes
and one interception. The few
occasions that the Duke quarterbacks
had time to throw, their

receivers were closely covered by
the Wahoo secondary.

Because of the strong effort
turned in by Reid and the other
members of the Cavalier defensive
unit, Virginia is now propelled back
into the heat of the A.C.C. title
race. Non-league opponent, William
and Mary, must face the tough
Wahoo defense next Saturday.
