Newspaper Installed New Magnetic Tape Composing System

Publishing a newspaper with a
circulation of 8,000 four times a
week is a demanding task, requiring
funds, organization, and most of
all, dedicated staff members.

For the student who is willing
to give a little of his time each
week, The Cavalier Daily offers a
chance to become part of the
University's most exciting and
challenging extracurricular activity.

Since The Cavalier Daily
expanded a year ago to its present
eight-column format, a large
working staff is needed every day in
all areas of the paper's publication.

The news department needs
reporters to search out the news
and write the stories each day. This
is an unparalleled opportunity to
learn more about the University
and the interesting people who
make news around the Grounds, as
well as to be in touch with events.

Writers with a knack for
invention or the ability to analyze
are in constant demand for the
features staff of The Cavalier Daily.

An interest in athletics
combined with writing ability is the
perfect combination for the
newspaper's sports department,
whose job it is to cover all
University athletic events.

In the business end of The
Cavalier Daily, students are needed
to solicit advertisements, lay out
the ads and handle the paper's large
daily circulation. Being a part of
this facet of the newspaper's
operation offers valuable business
experience.

A typical afternoon's activity at
The Cavalier Daily's offices on the
fifth floor of Newcomb Hall begins
with a meeting of the editors to
discuss the news of the day and the
format and content of the
following day's paper.

The entire staff then begins to
work. Reporters and photographers
are given story and picture
assignments; the city editors begin
checking copy and dispatching it to
the secretaries; and page editors
plan the lay outs.

Beginning this year, The
Cavalier Daily will use the most
up-to-date IBM typesetting
equipment to aid in its efficient and
prompt publication.

These new machines will be
entirely student-run, making The
Cavalier Daily an entirely
student-dominated publication.

The result of the combined
efforts of all the members of the
staff greets students Tuesday
through Friday mornings around
the Grounds.

No previous journalistic
experience is necessary to join the
staff of The Cavalier Daily.
First-year men interested in joining
the staff may apply for positions
from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through
Thursday on the fifth floor of
Newcomb Hall.
