Thompson Leads Scoring

BY PAUL DUNN

As the ACC heads down the
home stretch, the race for
individual scoring honors is
essentially a three-man affair.

David Thompson, N.C.
State's star forward, leads the
league, scoring at a 25.3 points
per game clip. He is closely
followed by the Deacons' Tony
Byers and the Terrapins' Tom
McMillen.

Virginia's Barry Parkhill is
fifth, averaging 18.6 points a
game.

McMillen continues to lead
the league in field goal
percentage with Bobby Jones
of the Tar Heels a distant
second.

Although N.C. State's
high-powered offense has
dipped below the 100
points-per-game average for the
first time this year, the
Wolfpack continues to lead the
loop at a 96.6 pace

In team defense, the
Cavaliers continue to lead the
ACC, allowing a stingy 71.5
points per game.

On the basis of his inspired
play in Duke's upset of
Maryland last Saturday, Gary
Melchionni, the Blue Devils'
star guard, has been named the
ACC Player of the Week.
Teammate Bob Fleischer
rewarded for his stalwart work
on the boards, was named the
Rookie of the Week.

Through games last
weekend, ACC teams had
compiled an impressive 57-17
record against non-conference
opponents.
