On Astroturf Tomorrow

Stickmen, Hofstra Tangle

By Randy Wert

Fresh from a satisfying rout of
Washington and Lee on University
Hall's lower athletic bog, Virginia's
9-1 lacrosse squad heads north
tomorrow for an important contest
with Hofstra.

Undefeated against
intercollegiate competition by
virtue of the 13-4 bombing of the
Generals, the Cavaliers are looking
for win number 10 against the Long
Island Dutchmen, who will host the
NCAA tournament on June 5th.
Playing at night and on Astroturf
for the first time may prove a
disadvantage for Virginia but will
be valuable practice for the
tournament.

Coach Howdy Myers, a Wahoo
alumnus, is in his 22nd year in
charge of Hofstra's lacrosse
fortunes, and has rolled up a 10-2
mark thus far against top notch
opponents. Sporting a tenacious
zone defense, the Dutchmen have
dropped contests to Army (15-10)
and Navy (8-5).

Dropping a 14-3 decision in
Charlottesville last year, Hofstra has
won only one of the three games in
the series. Lacrosse is played in a
slightly different style on Long
Island and this could prove to be a
factor as Virginia draws most of its
talent from schools accustomed to
the "Baltimore Style." The
difference lief in the manner of
offensive attack which, in the Long
Island form, stresses strong
one-on-one, free-lancing type play
with little cutting and patterned
play. This will not be the first look
the Cavaliers have gotten at the
so-called "hotdog" style as
Cornell's unsuccessful first half
strategy was of this nature in their
game in Charlottesville.

Sixth ranked in this week's
national lacrosse poll. Hofstra will
be striving to put on a good show in
order to snare one of the three
remaining berths for the tourney.
Army, Navy, Cornell, Brown and
Virginia have already received
invitations to participate in the first
national playoff.

Naturally, the Cavaliers are not
at a loss for initiative as a win in
New York would complete an
undefeated collegiate season which
escaped them last year with the loss
to Navy.

Latest statistics show third year
mid-fielder Pete Eldredge leading in
goals scored at 26 by virtue of his
brilliant seven tally after against
W&L. His two assists gave him a
total of 34 points, third behind Jay
Connor with 48 (23 goals, 25
assists) and Tom Duquette, who has
23 scores and has assisted 18 times
for 34 points. All three players
return next year, to the joy of head
coach Glenn Thiel.
