Meet In Chapel Hill Today

Matmen, UNC To Tangle

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The optimistic Cavalier wrestlers
travel to Chapel Hill this afternoon
to face North Carolina in their
second ACC dual meet of the
season.

The return to the mat of
heavyweight Bill Farrell, last year's
third place finisher in the
conference tournament, will be the
highlight of the match. Farrell, a
footballer, rejoined the squad after
sitting out the first semester and is
expected to add strength to a
position that has been a weak spot
for the Cavaliers all year.

North Carolina returns nine
lettermen from last year's weak
team which finished last in the ACC
tournament. According to Virginia
coach George Edwards they are
something of an unknown, because
"they seem to use an entirely
different lineup for every meet."

Wahoos Are Given Edge By Experts In Carolina Meet

Co-captain John Pegues, who
has an undefeated 9-0-2 record in
dual meets at the 150 pound slot
will lead the Cavaliers into the meet
along with 190-pounder Kevin
Michaels, currently sporting a 10-1
dual meet record.

Co-captain Ted Moore, out last
week with a knee injury, is
expected to return this week at
177, ten pounds above his normal
weight. First-year man Bonton
Spece will make his first varsity
appearance at 167, filling in at
Moore's usual slot.

Jack Johndrow and John Pitas
will join Moore in going up one
weight class, with Johndrow at 126
and Pitas at 134. The reason for the
moves, according to Mr. Edwards is
that "we don't want them cutting
weight for five weeks in a row."
Jim Holland will move in to fill the
spot at 118.

"We don't expect a real tough
meet," says Mr. Edwards,
"although they are capable of
surprising us. They have a couple of
good wrestlers, but we don't know
that much about them."

The meet is an important one
for the Cavaliers, who now stand
0-1 in the ACC as a result of their
pre-game loss to Maryland.
Tournament seedings are made as a
result of dual meet competition in
the conference, and are very
important when the tournament
comes around.

"The team really believes they
can go all the way this year," says
Mr. Edwards, who has been
pointing for a win in the
tournament since the start of the
season. "Last season we peaked too
early for the Maryland meet, but
this year our only goal is winning
the tournament." The tournament
is set for March 5 and 6 at
Memorial Gymnasium.
