Bob Bischoff Snags TD Aerial In Army Win From QB Bill Troup Who Sets Up At Bottom Right...

Last Saturday afternoon Coach
Ray Heidloff's varsity mermen
submerged William and Mary's
Indians by the score of 61-14. This
was the first win of the season for
the team, and the way in which
they triumphed gives rise to hopes
that the team may salvage a fairly
good record out of a season that is
already marred by four losses.
The Cavaliers garnered firsts in
every event except the 150 backstroke.
The two outstanding events
of the day were "Pep" Miller's
fine 200 breaststroke in which he
lowered the pool's existing record
of 2:40 to 2:39.6 and Tom Donaldson's
double lapping of the Indian's
swimmers in the 440-yd. freestyle.

After the Cavalier splashers took
the opening medley relay composed
of Capt. John Betz, Miller and
Rumery, they took first and second
in the next four events. Arch Ogden
and "Gale" Noble in the 220,
Johnny Richards and M. R. S.
Farber in the 50, and Percy McDonald
and Dave Baxter in the
dive, and Richards and Dick Rumery
in the 100. Marshall Williams
and Hal Tufty placed second and
third, respectively, behind Ostrow
in the 150 backstroke for the William
and Mary swimmers for their
only first of the day. The final
event of the day saw the Cavalier
440-yd. relay team lap the Indians,
and win in the fine time of 4:07.

...To Toss The Bomb To Bischoff For His Ninth '39 TD Pass

The yearling mermen closed
their season Saturday afternoon by
losing to Augusta Military Academy
by the score of 42-23. The
meet started out as if the yearling
team was going to win its first
meet of the season. The Cavaliers
took the medley relay in fine style,
Ellis, Halprin and Dabney chalking
up the first five points for Virginia.
The next four events however told
the story as Augusta took first and
second in the 230 and 50, first in
the dive, and first and third in the
century. Ellis and Halprin took
first in their respective events, 100-yd.
back and breaststroke, to put
the Cavaliers in the running again.
