Cagers Face GW
In D.C. Tonight
Sporting a commendable 7-12
record and still reminiscing last
week's 71-69 ACC triumph over
Lefty's speedy Terps, the Virginia
Cavaliers go after another win
tonight against the Generals
George Washington, against
whom Chip Case went down to the
floor and arose with a painful knee
injury, only one year ago, features
hot-handed Mike Talent, a 6-1, 170
pounder, who Coach Gibson says is
"Instrumental in their fast break."
With Talent in the backcourt is
Ron Nunn. Nunn, a sophomore
who broke the freshman scoring
record last winter, stands 6-3 and is
considered to be their most effective
ball handler.
The big inside men include John
Conrad, Walt Szczerblak, and Hal
Bryan. Conrad, at 6-10, is a strong
threat in close, but apparently has a
tendency to get into foul trouble
early.
Coach Gibson cites the 6-5
Szczerblak as a real threat, "We're
very much concerned...he likes to
hit both boards." Hal Bryant, who
is quick and last, rounds out GW's
starting five.
Coach Gibson rates George
Washington as an erratic ball club;
"They're a hot and cold team, and
we hope it is below zero." Mr. Gibson
speculates that GW's strong fast
break and outside game will adequately
challenge Virginia's emphasis
on an inside attack.
The Cavaliers who have been
out rebounding opponents all season
(Bill Gerry has a 211 total,
averaging 11 a game), will be
pressed to control the boards
Chip Case, who led the Cavaliers
to that decision over Maryland with
a 21 point effort, currently averages
some 16.2 points, while Gerry tops
the Cavaliers with 16.3 points a
game. Scott McCandlish is also
scoring in double figures with a
12.8 point average.
Kevin Kennelly and Tim Rash
continue in the backcourt. Kennelly
has an amazing 80.7 per cent
accuracy from the foul line, while
Rash's scoring potential from outside
is more and more evident (15
points against Maryland).
Fort Myer, home of George
Washington basketball, may not be
the most hospitable place in the
world, but the Cavaliers need a win
up there to pick up momentum and
enhance the chances of escaping
from the ACC cellar.
