Sept. 12
Wahoos Play Tech
"It was inevitable. There's
no doubt in my mind that
when the NCAA approved the
11th game in football they had
the Virginia-VPI game in mind
," mused the expectant Coach
Blackburn.
In a formal release issued
from both schools, it was
officially announced that the
Wahoos would face Virginia
Tech in Lane Stadium on
September 12.
This announcement ended a
circle of speculation that had
Virginia pitted against Georgia or
perhaps Tenn
The game is scheduled for
Blacksburg because Scott Stadium
had previously been set for
home games, while Tech had only
four home contests on ap.
Athletic Directors Steve Sb
and Frank Mly have apparently
reached an agreeable financial setup
whereby the schools will take a
50-50 split on the gate receipts,
once a ten percent chunk has been
deleted to cover game expenses.
The last time the two state rivals
banged heads was in 1966, when
the Gobblers ran up a 24-7 defeat
on the Wahoos in Scott Stadium.
With the exception of 1971, the
Cavaliers and Gobblers will meet
annually through the 1980 season.
Virginia Tech leads in the grid
rivalry 25-22, with four ties.
Jerry Claiborne, the successful
Tech coach, was out of town on a
recruiting mission, but it was
believed that he was happy with the
prospect of renewing the rivalry a
year earlier than expected.
Tech Athletic Director Frank
Mosely was exuberant: "It's great,
real wonderful. It should be a
sell-out, just like last year's opener
with Alabama."
Steve Sebo disclosed his opinions
as well; "It is a truly
outstanding game for both institutions."
In other football news, the
University of Richmond announced
that its 11th game would be held in
City Stadium against the Wolfpack
of North Carolina State on September
12.
