Puddle Jumpers
Hurtle Into First

By Tom West

The league leading
Hyborian Dogs were caught
with their tails dragging by the
Puddle Jumpers in I.M. softball
action at nameless field last
Monday afternoon, the loss
was the first for the 'Dogs
leaving them in a five-way tie
for first place in Division A
with the Puddle Jumpers, Math
Dept., U.V. Cats and Nukes.

The game remained a 1-1 tie
until the bottom of the third
when with the bases loaded Bill
Bardenwerper lashed a double
down the left field line to score
two runs. Catcher Greg Luce
then put the game on ice with
a homerun. It was then only
catch-up ball for the lackluster
'Dogs as they were only able to
muster two runs in the
remaining four innings and lost
9-3.

Gene Corrigan was the
winning pitcher for the
'Jumpers with Luce and Steve
Wells each rapping out three
safeties in four times at bat.

Meanwhile, the Nukes kept
pace with the division leading
teams when they walked over
the Jets, 18-4.

The Math Dept. had a
tougher time remaining in the
first place tie as they squeaked
by the Master Batters in a game
won in the bottom of the
seventh, 8-7.

The fifth team in the
Division A first place tie, the
U.V. Cats, also had a narrow
margin of victory in defeating
the Gym Rats by a 6-5 score.

It's still anyone's game in
the Division A title race. With
five teams having identical
records at this stage, it figures
to be a race to the wire. The
Jets seem to be the only team
fading from the picture as they
have yet to achieve their first
victory of the season.

Division B has ties also, but
of a wholly different nature.
For the second time in as many
weeks, the Academic Scribblers
were involved in a tie game.
This time they knotted things
up with Upward Bound in a
10-10 duel.

Aside from tie games,
Division B has the only
undefeated teams in the league.
The Pro's and Shelter People
continued to lead the others as
each team won a pair of games.
The Pro's stopped the Irons
cold, 7-1, and then fizzled the
Phizzies by the score of 10-1.

The Shelter People scored
the second highest run total of
the season when they poured it
on the Academic Scribblers,

19-3. Andromeda Strain then
had the 'People on the brink of
their first loss until a run in the
seventh got the 'People their
third victory without defeat.

The Psyclones of Division B
are also unbeaten yet are a half
game out of first by virtue of a
tie earlier this season. Last
week, the Psyclones crushed
the Andromeda Strain, 17-3,
and last night walloped the
Irons, 12-4. There is now a
battle shaped up for first place
in this division between the
Psyclones, Pro's and Shelter
People.

Other Division B action saw
the Phizzies move out of the
cellar last Thursday by blasting
Upward Bound in a high
scoring affair, 17-9. Upward
Bound now remains out of the
basement only by the thin
margin of last night's tie game.
