Duke Wins, 90-66

Second-Half Explosion 'Kills' Cavaliers

By STEVE GASKE

Last night the Hoos must
have thought they were living
through a nightmare in Blue
Hades as the Blue Devils
dealt them a 90-66 loss at
Cameron Indoor Stadium.

With the 'Hoos behind by
only five at the intermission,
the two halves seemed to be
two completely different
games.

The first half featured a
parade to the foul line that
couldn't even be considered a
good foul shooting contest, as
the two teams shot a
combined 21 for 37 from the
line.

Duke got the advantage in
this duel hitting twelve from
the charity stripe to nine for
Virginia. In addition, the only
Blue Devil to get into early
foul trouble was surprise
starter Bill Suk.

Virginia, on the other hand,
was crippled by three first-half
fouls on Wally Walker, Jim
Hobgood, and Lanny
Stahurski. Hobgood and the
Wonder were only able to
muster eight points between
them after having combined
for 38 in the Wake Forest
game.

At times it seemed as if
Barry Parkhill was literally
doing it all for the 'Hoos.
Finishing with a game high 21
points, Parkhill had 12 in the
first half to be the only
Virginia player with more than
four.

George Conley, the referee
that called the "controversial"
technical on Al Drummond
when N.C. State played in
U-Hall earlier this season, lost
no time in slapping Cavalier
Coach Bill Gibson with a
technical.

After a foul call on
Drummond early in the game,
Gibson stormed onto the court
and Conley slapped him with a
technical. When the Hooter
continued to argue, Conley hit
him with another, but the
Virginia mentor was not
ejected from the game.
Showing they weren't
prejudiced against the 'Hoos,
the refs assessed Duke with
three "Ts" for the game.

Bob Fleisher was the big
man for the Blue Devils as the
6'8" sophomore collected 18
points and 18 rebounds.
Probably the hottest board
man in the conference right
now, Fleisher has pulled down
48 bounds in his past three
games.

Duke wrapped the game up
early in the second half with a
20-4 burst that broke the
cold-shooting (34% for the
game) Cavalier's back.

On the basis of his team's
second half showing, Duke
coach Bucky Waters called the
game Duke's "best all around
performance of the season."

Gary Melchionni was one of
the prime reasons for Duke's
outstanding game. The senior
guard scored 16 points and
handed out 12 assists.

Chris Redding and Alan
Shaw were the other Blue
Devils to score in double
figures as the front line duo hit
for 14 and 11 points
respectively.

Saturday night, the Cavs
will attempt to comeback
against Penn State before a
Midwinters weekend crowd in
U-Hall.
