Military Boys Hope For Upset

By DOUG DOUGHTY

VMI, best known for its
w cut Keydets,
ritically weak athletic
and as the former
stop of Virginia
lant coach Mike Schuler,
the Cavaliers' next
opponent, tonight at 8 in
iversity Hall.

The Keydets, who compiled
improved 6-19 record last
year after one of the nation's
worst marks, 1-24, the year
before, are a young team. They
currently start a freshman, a
soph and three juniors. The
only seniors on the team are
"the last players to go in,"
according to a Lexington
source.

Top Scorers Return

The top five scorers return
from last year's outfit
including current starters
forwards Charlie Tyler and
Steve Wolf and guard David
Leste..

Also starting will be center
Steve Chapin, the leading
rebounder on the team for the
first two games with
Hampden-Sydney and George
Washington, and freshman
guard Curt Reppart.

Upset Leader

Most promising are the
guards, Lester and Reppart.
Lester, the Keydet floor leader,
is best remembered for
his leadership in. VMI's upset
win over VPI in the Roanoke
Classic last year. He recently
hit for 25 points on 10 of 13
shots from the field in the
Keydets' win over Hampden
Sydney, and Reppart added
18, on an 8-15 performance.

Starters Replaced

Bob Frank and Fred
Allison, last year's top
rebounders in Lexington, are
6-7 ex-starters who have been
replaced by Chapin and Wolf.
The third front court starter
Tyler led the Keydets in
scoring last year and he and
Lester were the only starters
not demoted when assistant
Bill Blair replaced Mr. Schuler
before this year's season.

Frank, Allison and one-time
starters Rod Brewer and Tim
Gundlach aren't even the top
reserves. Freshman Gordon
Rawlick is the first guard
substituted and Alan Hamen
who led the VMI Rats in
scoring last year see
considerable duty at the
forward spot.

Whipped Hampden Sydney

Humbling Hampden-Sydney
by the 14-point margin last
week, the Keydets received
their come-uppance Monday
against George Washington in
Lexington. Our VMI source
noted, "We're usually a good
shooting team, but last night
we stunk up the place."

Down by 19 at the half,
VMI came within six points of
the Colonials, 74-68, but
faltered in the stretch and
succumbed 85-73. All five
Keydet starters hit in double
figures, with Tyler and Chapin
leading the club with 15
points. Tyler also added 12
'bounds.
