Sullivan Dominates Statistics

With the regular season
nearly completed for all the
ACC teams most of the
individual statistical
championships in the
conference have been decided.
The team titles, however, are
still up for grabs with the two
Carolinas heading virtually all
the departments.

Not surprisingly, third-year
quarterback Bruce Shaw of
N.C. State seems assured of
winning both the total offense
and the passing crowns, while
his teammate Stan Fritts, only
the third ACC player to ever
score 100 points, has the
scoring lead wrapped up.

The rushing title this year
will go to Duke's Steve Jones,
who has more than lived up to
the pre-season predictions. He
has gained 1137 yards for a 4.3
average.

Virginia's Dave Sullivan was
another performer who didn't
let his supporters down. He has
dominated the ACC receiving
stats right from the start of the
season and is way out in front
in the fight for the pass
receiving crown.

Sullivan, in leading the
Wahoos to their most prolific
passing year in history, has
caught 49 passes producing
643 yards and a 4.9 catch per
game average, 12th best in the
nation. Cavalier Chuck Belic
is third in the ACC with 35
catches.

The punting honors in all
probability will go to Wake
Forest's Chuck Ramsey, who
currently places third among
the nation's leaders. He has
punted 62 times for a 43.9
average.

The team statistical titles are
still yet to be decided.
However, the betting man
would put his money on either
champion North Carolina or
N.C. State to win most
department crowns. UNC, with
three games still to play finds
itself in the top three in nine of
11 team categories.

Leading at the moment in
rushing offense, punt and kick
returns, the Tar Heels should
easily walk away with the
rushing crown. They have a
262.8 yd. per game average,
out gaining their nearest
competitor Duke by over 40
yards a game.

N.C. State, the other
Carolina state school,
meanwhile appears to have a
solid lead in the other offensive
departments.
