More than 50 players from
several states will come to the
University this weekend to compete
in the annual open tournament
sponsored by the University Chess
Club.

Among the players who will
play in the tournament are Virginia
Open Champion David Floreen,
former U.S. Armed Forces Champion
Charles Powell, and James
Slagle, a blind player who was a
member of the U.S. team at the
Braille Olympiads.

Last year's event was covered by
the New York Times, and the
winner, International Master Norman
T. Whitaker, was recently
featured in a cover story by Chess
Life and Review.

Play begins at 8 tonight in the
Dogwood Room of Newcomb Hall.
The contest will continue Saturday
and Sunday.

The winner will not only receive
the annually presented trophy, but
will also get a $100 cash award.
Spectators are welcome, but are
reminded that they must remain
silent during the play.
