Cavalier basketball coach
Bill Gibson announced
yesterday that 6-10 center
Lanny Stahurski has decided to
forego his last year of
eligibility as a Virginia player.

In the text of his official
statement, Mr. Gibson
admitted "It is with deep
regret that I must announce
that Lanny Stahurski, our
eighth leading scorer and
number six rebounder will not
compete for the 'Amazin'
Cavaliers' as a senior."

The statement hinted,
however, that 1973 will not be
the last year that Stahurski will
be seen on the Virginia playing
fields: "Although he
(Stahurski) has expressed a
desire to quit the program due
to his wish to attend the
University of Virginia Law
School, he has not ruled out
the chance of competing for
the Cavaliers in other sports."

Stahurski was unavailable
for comment yesterday
afternoon, but his close friend
and ex-teammate Bob McKeag
said that he thought that
Stahurski would try out for the
Virginia swimming team in the
winter, and might also consider
joining Don Lawrence's
football squad.

Swimming has always been
Stahurski's favorite sport and
when "Lunky" attended
Swissvale, Pennsylvania's St.
Anselm's High he held four
school swimming records,
including the 50,100 and
200-yard sprints and the
200-yard individual medley.

Coach Ron Good, who
originally recruited Stahurski,
bubbled yesterday "When
Lanny was in high school,
Indiana, USC and Tennessee all
wanted him. Of course, we
couldn't match their demands.
Getting a swimmer of Lanny's
stature has just got to turn the
program around."

His junior year at St.
Anselm's, Stahurski was a
member of the football team,
but was required to quit the
squad when the school
basketball coach rationalized
that playing two major sports
would hurt Lanny's basketball
timing and coordination.

When reached for
comment, the burly coach
Lawrence also bubbled (both
he and coach were at a U-Hall
cocktail party) and stated,
"Lanny Stahurski is the big,
speedy flanker I've been after."
