Tennyson's
Poetry Discussed

The grandson of Alfred, Lord
Tennyson, poet laureate to Queen
Victoria, will discuss his
grandfather's poetry today at the
University.

Sir Charles Tennyson, 90, who is
already at the University, will speak
on "Thy Life and Poetry of Alfred
Tennyson" at 8 p.m. in the
McGregor Room of Alderman
Library. The lecture, to be
sponsored by Phi Beta Kappa, is
open to the public. Sir Charles also
visited the University five years ago.

Among the works Sir Charles
has both written and edited
concerning his grandfather are
"Alfred Tennyson," "Six Tennyson
Essays" and "Unpublished Early
Poems by Alfred Tennyson."

During his stay at the
University, Sir Charles will meet
with students and will consult with
President Edgar F. Shannon Jr. and
Dr. Cecil Lang, professor of
English, who are collaborating on
an edition of Alfred Tennyson's
letters. Under a Danforth
Foundation grand, President
Shannon, a Tennyson scholar in his
own right, spent two months in
England last fall studying Tennyson
manuscripts just made available to
scholars.
