Fork Union Agency
In Tight Squeeze
The Central Virginia Community
Action Agency, a local branch
of the Office of Economic Opportunity
in Fork Union, Va. is finding
itself in a tight squeeze between the
needs of the people it's trying to
serve and the bureaucracy of its
national office.
Before May 1 of this year they
must be able to statistically confirm
the extent of malnutrition and
medical needs of the area in order
to beat the deadline for this year's
Emergency Food and Medical Care
Program.
Unfortunately, the necessary
data was lost in last summer's flood
and has only now been discovered
as missing.
John Highfill, the director of the
agency, has contacted the Department
of preventive Medicine at the
University Hospital and through
them has arranged for medical
students to aide in the assessment
of malnutrition of Buckingham
County.
But more people are needed
within the next two weeks to
complete the non-medical aspect of
the survey.
Clarance Wright who is heading
this part of the work hopes to get
undergraduate and graduate volunteers
for a house to house survey on
the dates of March 26, March 31,
and April 2.
Anyone who is interested in
helping should call 295-6209 at the
University. There will be an organizational
meeting 5 p.m. in room 2C
of the Medical School tomorrow.
