Assault

Rhodes and Mr. Hensley were
suspended for two weeks
without pay by Police Chief
John deK. Bowen. "Mad and
shaken" by the officers'
conduct in the incident, Mr.
Bowen said that there was
insufficient evidence to bring
charges against them.

However, Mr. Bowen said
that "bringing the charges to
court was justifiable." He
added that the dismissal of the
charges was simply "a decision
of the court."

Mr. Rhodes is currently
back on active duty. Mr.
Hensley resigned from the
department in mid-April.

Greenfield was not in the
court room when Mr. Barrick
dismissed the assault charges
against Mr. Rhodes. He asked
to be removed from the
hearing after his attorney,
Robert P. Boyle called him a
"liar" in his closing statement.

Officials reported that the
only other witness of the
incident was 17-year-old
Granderson Johnson,
Greenfield's cell mate.
Greenfield wanted Johnson to
testify in the court hearing, but
Johnson escaped from jail
April 23 while serving a 10
year sentence for various
charges. Johnson has not yet
been found.
