Further Danger

Other data indicates the
further danger of additional
cutbacks in the University's
budget requests. In April
1971, The Carnegie
Commission on Higher
Education issued its report and
recommendations on state
responsibility for
postsecondary education and
made two specific
recommendations for the State
of Virginia.

Commission Recommends

In noting that "less than 0.6
percent of per capita income is
spent through state and local
taxes for higher education," in
1967-68, the commission
recommended "emergency
effort" to aid postsecondary
education.

Pointing out that Virginia
was exporter of students
(14,770) in 1968 and that less
than 30 places are provided by
public and private institutions
in Virginia for every 100
young people or college age,
the Commission recommended
an "emergency effort" to
make postsecondary education
more accessible to the
college-age population of the
state.
