Expansion Will Continue
members of his decision to
re-affirm expansion before he
made the public
announcement.
In effect, the Future of the
University Committee has
either been caught with its
pants down or it has been
shown to have little real power.
Since the Chairman must have
known what was happening the
latter is the only logical choice.
However, it cannot be said that
this was unexpected. At the
time that the committee was
charged with studying
expansion, many
commentators made it clear
that all University Committees
are advisory to President
Shannon, so the final decision
is still his.
In short, expansion will
continue next year, and it will
continue so long as the
President of this University
wants it to continue, unless the
Board of Visitors ever stops
visiting and starts exercising its
authority, or until the General
Assembly does something, or
until President Shannon
retires/resigns, or until the
power of the President of this
University (whoever he may
be) is curtailed by the creation
of a University Senate with
true authority and actually
representative of this
University.
Since none of the above
possibilities is probable in the
near future, those who are
opposed to expansion will have
to continue to pressure
President Shannon and the
other parties in power. These
people are politically astute,
and they will react if the
proper amount of appropriate
pressure is brought to bear.
That includes public
meetings, letters, phone calls,
press releases, resolutions, and,
most importantly, studies
demonstrating the destruction
by expansion of this
University's admirable aspects.
Have you written anyone
yet?
