Dr. McLemore Birdsong,
professor of pediatrics at the
University's School of
Medicine, will discuss
rheumatic fever with area
physicians at 6:30 p.m.
tomorrow at the King's
Daughters hospital in
Staunton. The speech is the
fourth in a series of continuing
education programs, designed
to help community physicians
in Virginia keep abreast of
advances in medicine.

Dr. William Burton of the
biological laboratories of
Harvard University will speak
on "Some Studies of the
Genetic Control and Molecular
Mechanisms of Antibiotic
Resistance of Organelles in
Chlamydomonas." The
lecture will be given at 4:30
p.m. on Friday, December 10,
in room 150 of Gilmer Hall. It
will be preceded by a tea in
room 272 of Gilmer Hall at 4
p.m.

There will be an
organizational meeting on
Thursday December 9, at 8
p.m., to establish a community
environmental action group.
Among other things, the action
group hopes to aid in lobbying
for bike paths, assist local
stores and restaurants in the
reduction and recycling of
paper wastes, and also to stop
food service from being
wasteful in its operation. The
meeting will be held in room
310 of Tuttle House. All
concerned students are urged
to attend.

Nans U. Roll will be the
principle speaker at a
colloquium, "The present state
of air-sea interaction and
research application," on
December 13 at 3 p.m. in the
South Meeting Room of
Newcomb Hall. Mr. Roll is the
President of the Deutschen
Hycrographischen Institute in
Hamburg, Germany, and has
played a leading role in
national and international
research programs. The
colloquium is being sponsored
by the Center for Advanced
Studies and the Department of
Environmental Sciences.
