Gym Hosts Water Polo

The First Annual University
Water Polo Tournament, the first
such event on the East Coast, get
underway Friday at Memorial Gym
Pool, with seven state teams
participating.

The first round starts Friday at
11 a.m. in the two division
round-robin tournament, with
pairings to be drawn Friday
morning. Second round games start
at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and the third
round begins Saturday morning at
nine. The finals will be Saturday at
5 p.m. after a consolation game.

Teams in the event will come
from Lynchburg, Old Dominion,
Richmond, VMI, Washington and
Lee, William and Mary, as well as
the University.

Water Polo is played with a ball
which is larger than a volleyball but
smaller than a basketball. The rules
are similar to basketball. Points are
scored by throwing the ball into the
goal as in soccer. Teams consist of
even players, including three
guards, three forwards and a goalie.
Water polo players must have the
endurance of a marathon swimmer,
the ball-handling ability of a
basketball player and the quick
reactions of a lacrosse player.

There are four, seven minute
quarters in a game.

The tournament will be under
the direction of Ron Good.
