Rugby Sides Triumph,
Sud-Americano Falls

By TOM BELL

All four Cavalier rugby sides
scored victories this weekend in
play Sunday in Washington, D.C.

The "A" side rolled to an
impressive win against the
Sud-Americano side of Washington
as they avenged a loss to the same
team last spring by a 20-0 score.

"Virginia controlled all aspects
of the game, said a Rugby Club
spokesman yesterday, "including
line-outs, loose scrums and set
scrums."

Cavalier Scoring

Chuck Shelton and Jay Waldron
scored on runs of about 30 yards
for the Cavaliers and Byron
Shankman added a third try, while
Tom Furniss handled the kicking
chores and scored eight points.

Morgan Cooper made some
excellent runs according to the
spokesman, including one that set
up Waldron's try.

The Cavaliers took a 7-0 lead in
the first half before completely
running away from Sud-Americano
with an 11-point second half that
put the game out of reach.

The "A" side is now 3-1 for the
season with the only loss against a
highly-rated touring Australian side.

'Turques' Romp

The "Turques" or "B" side
romped to a 30-3 win over the
Turkey Thicket club, also of
Washington. Greg Thompson scored
three tries from his center position
to lead the team to the easy win.

Hooker Bill Binford and lock
John Oliver also scored tries for the
"Turques". Tight-head prop Phil
Mitchell was credited with playing
an excellent game as well as kicking
five conversions for ten points.

Third Side Wins

The Cavalier third side won over
the Sud-Americano "B" team by a
10-4 margin. Greg Luce scored a try
for the Cavaliers while Andy
Anderson kicked the conversions.

West Virginia Wesleyan provided
the competition for the fourth
Cavalier side and gave the Virginia
team the closest game of the day as
they resisted stiffly before falling
12-10.

Randy Greslin starred in this
contest as he scored on two runs of
about fifty yards and had several
other long sprints. Ron Pulliam also
scored a try for the Cavaliers.

The ruggers stay on the road this
week as teams travel to two
different places. The "A" side and
two other squads will travel to
College Station, Pennsylvania, to
take on Penn State, while the
"Turques" will go to Lexington to
play Washington and Lee.
