Booters Shock
Terrapins, 2-1

Down but not out after a
demoralizing 5-1 setback to
Clemson, Sunday, the Cavalier
booters roared back to stun
Maryland, 2-1, Wednesday
afternoon, at Maryland.

The magnanimity of the triumph
was readily evident as it represented
the University's first soccer win
ever over Maryland and it thrust
Virginia right back into the thick of
the ACC pennant race. In just as big
an upset, North Carolina had fallen
victim to previously weak sister
N.C. State, 2-0, Tuesday. Duke
remains the only unbeaten league
team, with each of the other
contenders having lost once.

Maryland started quickly,
launching a 7-shot barrage on
Cavalier goalie Scott Peyton in the
first quarter. Fortunately, each was
handled. Virginia, in the meantime,
attempted no shots and was being
shut out. Midway through the
second period, however, Cavalier
forward Andy DuPont launched a
soft punch shot into the right
corner of the net which have the
University a 1-0 margin at halftime.

Remaining ever as well-played
and action-filled, the second half
was again characterized by stiff
defense. The Terps finally broke
through with 1:12 left in the third
period as prolific scorer George
Taratsides scored on he front end
of a fast break to knot the score at
1-1.

The Cavalier's gusty play proved
fruitful in the fourth period as Phil
Crane, the University's top scorer,
applied the shocker on an
unassisted crossing shot into the
left corner of the net with 8:10
remaining in the contest.

The Cavaliers defense stopped and
prevented the shot-happy Terps
from sending the game into
overtime heralded "the school's
greatest soccer game ever."

The Cavaliers upped their
seasonal mark to 4-1 with the
victory. The sole loss came against
Clemson. Maryland had edged
Clemson earlier last week and have
only the one loss on the season.
The Cavaliers take on North
Carolina, next Monday, at home, in
what definitely ranks among the
most important games for both
teams.
