The Bad Check Committee is
an agency of the Honor
Committee established in 1950
to deal with problems created
through the passing of bad
checks by University students.

It is comprised of the
secretaries of the undergraduate
schools of the University. The
growth of the University since
1940 has to some degree
multiplied the number of
problems facing the Bad Check
Committee, but its purpose still
remains the same. Today, the
Committee continues to assist,
in every way possible.
Charlottesville businessmen and
University students to resolve
their problems concerning bad
checks.

As a direct and tangible
benefit of our Honor System,
the Charlottesville business
community is a very unique
University business community,
probably the only one of its
kind in the world. The
merchants here trust the
students and, consequently
extend to them the convenience
of almost unlimited check
cashing privileges. It is not
usually necessary to present
your driver's license and two or
three credit cards to get a check
cashed. For most Charlottesville
merchants, your University
Identification Card is sufficient.

This spirit of goodwill and
mutual trust between the local
businessmen and students is a
valuable and cherished
relationship that should be
jealously protected. Students
should never unnecessarily
burden this relationship by
carelessly cashing bad checks.

Almost all of the students of
this University have checking
accounts and conduct some part
of their everyday business by
check. For this reason, it is
important that all University
students know how to properly
handle such an account in order
that they will not be guilty of
passing bad checks. Banks are
usually more than happy to
answer any questions which
might arise, and there is available
in the Bad Check Committee
Office, Fourth Floor, Newcomb
Hall, a sheet entitled "Handling
a Checking Account" which
might also prove helpful.

With the expanding
enrollment of the University of
Virginia being what it is today, it
has become increasingly
important that all students know
the proper procedures with
which to handle bad checks
should they arise. The following
is the new policy and procedure
outline issued by the Bad Check
Committee this fall:

Upon receipt of a notice of a
bad check from the Secretary to
the Bad Check Committee
(G.A. Truslow, the Bursar's
Office, First Floor, Garrett Hall)
a student will be extended a five
day grace period in which to
reimburse the payee of the bad
check. Settlement for checks
cashed by Charlottesville
merchants, businessmen, or
banks should be made directly
with these institutions.

Payment for checks cashed in
Newcomb Hall (excepting the
bank) or with Food Service
(Newcomb Hall Bookstore, The
Cafeteria, The Grill, The Glass
Hat, The Castle, The Cave, etc.)
must be made by going to
Garrett Hall and paying the
Secretary to the Bad Check
Committee, Mrs. Truslow.

If reimbursement for the bad
check is made with someone
besides Mrs. Truslow (such as a
Charlottesville merchant), then
the student is responsible for
seeing that Mrs. Truslow is
notified that satisfactory
settlement has been made.

This must also be done
within the five day grace period.
The student can notify Mrs.
Truslow either by going to
Garrett Hall or by calling her at
924-3230. Office hours at
Garrett Hall are Monday through
Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2
p.m. to 5 p.m.

If you ever have any
questions concerning the
operation of the Bad Check
Committee, please feel free to
contact us at 924—3452, or
come by our office in the
Student Government Office,
Fourth Floor, Newcomb Hall.
