development I have difficulty in
determining where it is. I have lived
almost all of my life in the Middle
West. Illinois and Iowa are rich —
terribly rich, but they are not
particularly attractive physically.
By contrast Albemarle County, in
terms of natural beauty, must be
one of the most attractive regions
on the face of the earth. But too
much of that natural beauty has
been injured by human hands. This
bothers me. I want the process
curtailed. I wish the University
could do something to protect the
area's astonishing attractiveness.
But even here I have no quarrel
with the University. My
commitment is rather complete. I
hope to build a house west of
Charlottesville, where I can see the
Blue Ridge, sometime during the
next year. This is some measure of
my commitment to the University.
For after I obtain that house I
cannot leave even if I want to.
