University of Virginia Library

English Department
To Sponsor Lecture

A leading English Authority on
the work of the Irish poet William
Butler Yeats will speak at the University
on Monday.

A. Norman Jeffares, Professor
of English literature at Leeds University
in Yorkshire, England, will
Discuss "Yeats: the Man and the
Poet" in a talk sponsored by the
English department.

The program is first in this
year's series of lectures and readings
sponsored by the Department of
English.

Mr. Jeffares, educated at Dublin
and Oxford and a Fellow of the
Royal Society of Arts, held posts in
Australia, Scotland, and Ireland and
the Netherlands and has written or
edited five books on Yeats. Most
recent of these is "A Commentary
on the Collected Poems of
W.B. Yeats." The Virginia Quarterly
Review acclaimed this study as "a
work of quiet and very great
scholarship... It is hard to imagine a
critical work more useful or valuable."

A versatile scholar, in the English
University tradition, Jeffares
has either written or edited studies
on such diverse authors as Sheridan,
George Moore, Farquhar, Goldsmith,
Swift, and Walt Whitman.

William Butler Yeats, subject of
the talk, is a poet who continues to
fascinate and perplex readers of
ages and points of view, a department
spokesman commented.

Open to the public, the lecture
is scheduled for 8 PM in the
McGregor Room of the Alderman
Library.
